A Mary Tyler Moore Show Test Scene

It’s not often you get a chance to compare two versions of the same sitcom scene, but every now and then, you do. Here’s a famous moment from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, as it played out on broadcast, when Mary first meets Lou Grant.

It’s a great scene, and regarded as a classic for a reason. But it wasn’t the first time the scene had been staged. CBS included a version of it in a sizzle reel, probably meant for advertisers.

What’s interesting is the change in character of Lou, who in the earlier version is somehow more gruff and menacing, totally unlikeable as he looms over Mary.

Does anyone know if this was just a test shoot, or if it’s from a whole unbroadcast pilot? Also, are they using a set from another show?
