A rather nice thing just arrived, and I wanted to share some of it with you.
That’s the BBC Training Manual written by Harold Snoad, on Directing Situation Comedy.
And here’s the only bit of marginalia (the manual was an ex-library copy).
While best known as a producer and director, Snoad also co-wrote the radio sitcom It Sticks Out Half A Mile, a sequel to Dad’s Army. His writing partner was Michael Knowles.
Together they wrote a TV pilot of the show, removing the Dad’s Army characters. It was called Walking The Planks. The BBC didn’t want more.
So they took it to Yorkshire Television, re-cast it a bit, and made seven episodes of High & Dry, which aired at the start of 1987.
