The biggest audience Vic & Bob ever enjoyed was in the advertisement break for a 1998 episode of Coronation Street.
It’s estimated that 23 million people saw this punchline to a seven year advertising campaign. The company sold 26,000 cars in the two months following this debut. There’s a joke about the campaign in Birds Of A Feather, and in The Mary Whitehouse Experience, as well as mention of it by Jasper Carrott in his Commercial Breakdown.
Smith & Jones even did a sketch featuring Papa kerb-crawling.
And then just like that … it was gone.
