America Gets The Birds

We’ve looked before at the FOX network’s remake of Birds Of A Feather. It was called Stand By Your Man, starred Rosie O’Donnell, and aired in the US in the spring of 1992. Whilst looking at clippings for Keeping Up Appearances, I came across this interesting article …

It’s from the Mirror on Saturday 27th October 1990, and seems to be referring to a different adaptation than the FOX one. Marks and Gran say they’re working with CBS, and it’s a long time before the FOX show.

I do wonder if the article above is just wrong, because only a few days later, in a clipping we’ve seen before, The Stage seems to suggest that Stand By Your Man is being made by FOX.

But then, come February of 1991, The Stage says this …

The Stage – Thursday 07 February 1991

And now, by June, the full details seem to be in place.

The Stage – Thursday 20 June 1991

In fact, this deal appears to have taken years to come to fruition, as witnessed by this article from 1989.

The Stage – Thursday 28 December 1989

There’s a brief mention of Stand By Your Man in this article about Lesley Joseph.

Daily Mirror – Saturday 31 August 1991

And it’s left to the Aberdeen Press And Journal, of all places, to tell the country that the pilot has been picked up and given a series commitment.
